Capsized Ferry in Bangladesh

mawa

The M.V. Pinak (AKA Pinak-6) ferry was crossing the River Padma in Munshigann and capsized with up to 250 passengers at about 11:00 am on Monday August 4. The accident occurred between the Kawrakandi ferry terminal and the Mawa ferry terminal.

Some of the passengers may have survived. Emergency workers and army teams are on the scene, as well as BIWTC and BIWTA tugboats. Different sources report from 44 to 110 passengers pulled live from the wreckage. Another source says fourteen bodies were recovered. The salvage operation is apparently trying to rescue survivors, not find bodies, according to Lauhajang police officer-in-charge Md Tajul Islam.

Identities have not been released nor has there been an indication of there were any specific survivors. The cause of the accident has not been reported officially, but at least one source said that the ferry was overloaded, and the river was rough.

A few of the passengers who were on the ferry’s roof were rescued.
